The rules driving glass markings in New York offices
Distraction markers — also called manifestation, or just "the frosted band" — are what makes a full-height glass wall visible to the person walking toward it. In NYC the requirement usually arrives from three directions at once: accessibility standards, the building code's glazing rules, and your landlord's tenant criteria.

- Full-height glass doors and sidelights adjacent to a door need visual markings so the glass reads as a barrier. In practice that means a marking band people see at both standing and seated eye level, which is why offices usually get two bands rather than one.

- Glazing in hazardous locations must be safety glazing and permanently identified. Markers do not replace safety glass — they stop walk-into collisions on glass that is already compliant, which is the failure mode building managers actually see.

Glass types
What we're marking, and why the glass changes the answer
Frameless full-height partitions
Demountable office fronts, 10–12mm tempered. Markers go on the room side unless the corridor is the higher-traffic route; we mark the face people actually walk into.
Butt-glazed conference walls
Long uninterrupted runs with silicone joints. Continuous bands or a repeating pattern read better here than isolated dots, and they hide the joints instead of drawing attention to them.
Herculite and all-glass entry doors
Doors need marking plus a clear pull/push zone. We keep film off the patch fittings and hardware so the closer can still be serviced.
Low-iron and back-painted glass
Low-iron glass is the worst offender — it disappears. It usually needs higher-contrast film than tinted or reflective glazing to be seen under lobby lighting.
Laminated storefront and vestibules
Exterior-facing glass sees backlighting all day, so we sample film opacity on site before committing; what reads clearly at 9am can vanish at 4pm.
Curved and textured glazing
Reeded, fluted, and curved glass needs film cut in segments with relief joints. Applied as one sheet it will tent and lift within weeks.

Midtown law firm, full floor
Frameless glass office fronts plus two butt-glazed conference walls. Two frosted bands at ADA heights with a fine dot fade so partners kept the sightline into the corridor. Installed over one Saturday between the floor's turnover and Monday move-in.
Flatiron coworking build-out
Low-iron phone booths and meeting rooms that were genuinely invisible. Branded pattern band at standing height and a privacy band at seated height, matched to the operator's graphics manual and repeated across every room type.
Manhattan medical suite
Herculite entry doors and a glazed reception screen. Higher-opacity etched film for patient privacy at the check-in window, with marker bands kept clear of the door hardware so the closers stayed serviceable.

Glass marker questions we get weekly
- What height do glass safety markers have to be in NYC?
- The ADA-aligned convention used across NYC offices is a marking band roughly 34–44 inches above the floor for seated and lower sightlines and a second band around 60–70 inches for standing sightlines. Some landlord criteria sheets fix exact heights for the whole building — if yours does, we build to that instead of the default.
- Are distraction markers legally required?
- There is no single line in the code that says 'apply frosted dots.' The requirement comes from ADA visual-marking rules on glass doors and adjacent sidelights, NYC glazing rules for hazardous locations, and your building's own tenant criteria. For full-height glass in a workplace, markers are effectively expected — and after any glass-strike incident they get mandated fast.
- Do markers replace safety glass?
- No. Safety glazing is a property of the glass. Markers make glass visible so people do not walk into it. They are complementary controls, and an inspector will look for both.
- Can the markers carry our logo or brand pattern?
- Yes, and it is the most requested version. We print or contour-cut the band from your artwork — logo repeat, dot fade, or a graphic motif — while keeping the coverage and contrast that make it function as a marker.
- Will installation disrupt the office?
- Rarely. Application is wet-applied vinyl: no dust, no drilling, no power tools. A typical floor is a few hours, and we work evenings or weekends when the building requires it.
- Do they come off cleanly at end of lease?
- Yes. Frosted and printed films peel off tempered glass without residue, and we handle removal as its own service when you are restoring the space.
